Arbor Day Proclamation and Press Release

PROCLAMATION 

2022 Arbor Day 

 

WHEREAS, in 1872, the Nebraska Board of Agriculture established a special day to be set aside for the planting of trees, and WHEREAS this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska, and

WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and 

 

WHEREAS, The Village of South Glens Falls Village Board of Trustees is committed to the redevelopment of our municipal tree inventory with this Arbor Day Grant provided by the New York State Urban Forestry Council allowing for the planting of 3 new trees located at Harrison Avenue Elementary, Oliver Winch Middle School and near the Hudson Avenue and 5th Street intersection; and

 

WHEREAS, trees can be a solution to combating climate change by reducing the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cutting heating and cooling costs, moderating the temperature, cleaning the air, producing life-giving oxygen, and providing habitat for wildlife, and 

 

WHEREAS, The Village of South Glens Falls is expanding on its efforts to improve our urban forestry plan from last year where we planted 30 new trees as part of a Community Block Development Grant on Wilson and Haviland Avenue.  This year the Village budgeted to purchase an additional $3000 in new trees to further improve our streetscape and urban design; and

 

WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community, and 

 

WHEREAS, trees — wherever they are planted — are a source of joy and spiritual renewal. 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nicholas J. Bodkin, Mayor of the Village of South Glens Falls, do hereby proclaim April 29th, 2022, as ARBOR DAY In the Village of South Glens Falls, and I urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands, and 

 

FURTHER, I urge all citizens to plant trees to promote the well-being of this and future generations.

Press Release

April 25th, 2022

For Immediate Release:

The Village of South Glens Falls received an Arbor Day Grant provided by the New York State Urban Forestry Council.  This Grant provides up to $1000 for the Village to plant 3 new trees to be located at Harrison Avenue Elementary and Oliver Winch Middle School and One additional Tree to be planted near the intersection of 5th Street and Hudson Avenue.  

This celebration is held in conjunction with Harrison Avenue Students and Oliver Winch Middle school students. The Village will conduct an Arbor Day Celebration and Proclamation Friday April 27th at Harrison Avenue Elementary School at 10:00 a.m. An additional ceremony will be held at 12:00 p.m. at Oliver Winch Elementary.
